FAQs

General Information

Q:

What is UDWC?

A:

UDWC stands for UTCH Davis/Weber co-op. We are a *UTCH state member home education cooperative meeting weekly for 10-week fall and winter terms to provide group instruction in a variety of subjects.  We are a parent participation co-op and not a drop off program. We currently meet at Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton city in Davis county.  The church does not operate our co-op, it has offered the space as a ministry/out-reach.  Our co-op is made up of UTCH state member families who attend a wide variety of area churches. *UTCH.org

Q:

Where do you meet?

A:

Our host campus is Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton, Utah (Davis County). The church does not operate our co-op, it has offered the space as a ministry/out-reach.

Q:

When do you meet?

A:

UDWC meets once a week on Thursdays for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the winter (usually September-November and January-March). The co-op day begins promptly at 9 and ends at 1:45. We enjoy a 30 minute lunch break at 12:15 followed by a planned PE related class or activity.

Q:

What ages can participate?

A:

In addition to nursery care, UDWC has classes for pre-school through grade 12, dependent on coordinator offerings.

Q:

Who teaches the classes?

A:

UDWC classes are taught by parents, guardians, and friends in the community.

Q:

May I be with my children during the day?

A:

Each parent/guardian on campus has a required number of serving units they must sign up for, in order to allow the co-op to operate smoothly. You will have the opportunity to choose where you serve, based on availability, but your service units may not necessarily be with your children.

  • The units are broken down as follows:
    • Helper Units – can be served in any class in co-op and NOT necessarily only in your children's classes.
    • Teaching Units – only if the class your child/children are registered for is a teacher rotation class.
    • Nursery Units – Those serving in the 11:15 hour of nursery are required to do the cleaning of nursery.
    • Cleaning Units – Cleaning the building begins at 12:15 or later
      • Two families work together to empty garbages, tidy, wipe down bathrooms, collect lost items, sweep Fellowship Hall.
    • PE Units - only if participating in PE (After lunch)

Q:

When will you begin planning the courses for the upcoming school year?

A:

Typically, planning meetings for this large group co-op are announced and shared via our local, private google group for UTCH state member families and begins each April. Course Descriptions, (developed by those who choose to serve as coordinators) are submitted in May and published to our local UTCH families on this website in June. Three park day information meetings to share UDWC information take place during June and July.  On-line registration opens up for 2 weeks in July (a week sooner for those who choose to serve as coordinators!).  Team leaders distribute registration information at the required park day information meetings.

Q:

What can I do with my infant?

A:

UDWC has nursery care for infants through age 2.  All co-op participants register for nursery care slots throughout the co-op year to provide supervision for the nursery children from 9-12:15 PM.

Q:

Where can we learn more about this co-op?

A:

We have TWO Visitor Days during our co-op terms (Fall & Winter). We also have 3 park day information meetings in the summer (before Registration opens). Please see the calendar for these dates.

NOTE: ALL families new to UDWC and those who last participated in UDWC within two years of the upcoming year are required to attend ONE of 3 park day information meetings OR a Visitor Day.

  • You cannot register for classes unless you attend a Park Day or Visitor Day information meeting.

  • There are three park days. Park days are from 9:00-10:00 am at Grey Hawk Park, 3500 Redtail Way, Layton, UT 84040. These dates are listed on our calendar.

Q:

What are the fees to join UDWC?

A:

Mandatory Background Check Fee Payable to MVBC for every parent/guardian/teacher/helper on campus at MVBC on UDWC class days (good for 2 calendar years) $6
Class Supply Fees Set by coordinators and payable directly to them in cash at orientation. Variable

Q:

Do I have to join UTCH (Utah Christian Homeschool Association) or any other organization to be a member?

A:

UDWC is a ministry of UTCH (Utah Christian Homeschool Association). UTCH membership is a requirement for participation in this particular co-op. We verify UTCH state membership with the state membership secretary. As a UTCH member, you are welcome to join any of the state co-ops (or even begin one of your own with a few other families)!

Q:

Why can't I register late?

A:

Our co-op has grown beyond the size where we can easily handle families moving in and out after the registration deadline. Our building size limits our membership to 40-50 families.  We tried in the past to accommodate new students throughout the term and it was very time consuming for the Leadership Team and the coordinators to orient new families, shuffle teaching and helping schedules and add/subtract students throughout the term. After much prayer, the Leadership Team made the difficult decision to create a firm registration deadline to protect the time of all the coordinator and Leadership Team volunteers.  We are so grateful for all of our coordinators and their willingness to volunteer their time facilitate a class.  We don’t want to make their job any harder than it is.  We do welcome new families to attend our November visitor day and register for winter term courses if there is availability.  Watch this website (and the calendar)  for Visitor Day details!

Membership

Q:

What is the cost of this co-op?

A:

All fees are non-refundable and payable in cash at our orientation day in late August/early September (or January for Winter Term Registrants). No fees are refundable if a family withdraws, as coordinators purchase supplies before co-op begins.

Current Fees (as of 2023-2024 Co-op Year) are:

  • $30 - Co-op family registration fee
  • $6 - Mandatory background check and cash fee payable to MVBC for every parent/guardian/teacher/helper on campus at MVBC on UDWC class days.
  • Individual class supply fees are set by coordinators and payable directly to them in cash at orientation. (These fees are included in Bold Red at the end of each class description. They are listed per term, so double the fee for a year long class.)
  • All fees subject to change.

Q:

What are my responsibilities at the co-op?

A:

Each parent/guardian on campus has a required number of serving units they must sign up for, in order to allow the co-op to operate smoothly. The infrastructure to set up the co-op (2 adults per room, nursery coverage, cleaning building) makes it impossible to evenly divide up those responsibilities based on how many participating children you have in the co-op. Your units will be the same regardless of the number participating children you have in the co-op.

Q:

Will I have to teach/coordinate a class?

A:

It is not required for all parents to coordinate/teach a class. However, all parents/guardians will have an amount of helping unit requirements to serve in classes, nursery, P.E. (if your students register for P.E.) and cleaning.

Q:

Do I have to attend every week?

A:

We ask families who choose to participate in this co-op to commit to participation for the full year and also commit to regular attendance, missing only due to illness or emergency. We ask families in UDWC to make co-op attendance a priority and schedule family vacations, activities, and appointments on different days. If you cannot commit to regular attendance and participation for the full year, UDWC is not the right co-op for your family. UDWC is volunteer dependent and the short terms (10 weeks) mean that every week's materials are very important for students to receive the benefit of participation. In addition, withdrawals during the co-op year burden coordinators, teachers, and co-op families with the time-consuming responsibility of filling empty teaching and helping units.

Q:

Can I drop my kids off for this co-op?

A:

This is NOT a drop-off co-op. UDWC classes are taught by parents, guardians, and friends in the community.  Parents/guardians are on campus for the day, (classes START at 9:00am and end at 1:45pm). Parents guardians at UDWC are busy all day teaching and helping, in their own childrens' classes or other classes, serving in the nursery, substituting for sick teachers/helpers, cleaning, etc.

Q:

Do my children have to participate all day?

A:

No.  You may enroll your students in any number of classes that meet your educational plans.  However, be aware that the infrastructure to set up the co-op (2 adults per room, nursery coverage, building cleaning) makes it impossible to evenly divide up those responsibilities based on how many hours you attend.  Know that when you register, your Helper, Nursery and Cleaning Units are going to be the same whether you register for 1, 2, or 3 of the morning hours.  Those helper units are divided among all participating families, regardless of how many hours they are enrolled in classes. Most parents find it unrealistic to participate fewer than 3 hours.
